About Intensive Care Nurses

ICUs are a critical part of patient care

Intensive care nurses (also known as critical care nurses) help take care of patients in intensive care units (ICUs). These patients have life threatening injuries or illnesses and require constant care, in addition to specialist equipment and medication. Candidates who are interested in working in this area should look our guidelines below before applying:

  • NMC registered (with current pin)
  • 18 months hospital experience (not applicable if you have a relevant diploma)
  • Strong interest in ICU practices
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Good record keeping skills
  • Must be willing to work unsociable hours, including weekends
  • Excellent team player

There are specialised ICU units across hospital departments, including:

  • Renal
  • Paediatric
  • Coronary

Specialised ICUs require additional training and experience. Working in an ICU can be a good opportunity to specialise in an area of interest.
